New Yorkers can now call a new toll-free hotline, 1-888-OSC-4555, to report allegations of fraud, corruption or abuse of taxpayer money, New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi announced today. New Yorkers can also continue to report allegations of malfeasance online at www.osc.state.ny.us.
“Our office is working to find and fight fraud at every level of state and local government and we need the public’s help to do so,” Hevesi said. …
…The division investigates allegations of fraud relating to State agencies, public authorities, local governments, school districts and vendors doing business with the State.
The phone line will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, or a report can be filed online (form available at the above link). Callers may remain anonymous, and the identity of those reporting suspected activity will remain confidential.
Since 2003, they have received 500 complaints/findings. 90 have been referred for potential prosecution, and to date, there has been a total of 44 arrests, guilty pleas, or convictions.
